Homemade Salsa

Give us our food for today.  Matthew 6:11

Almost a year ago I had the best salsa I’ve ever had in my life.  It was from a restaurant called Mojitos, and let me tell you, it was awesome.  After having said salsa I got into a bad little habit of running in to Mojitos just to buy it.  I was doing this more often than I care to admit, and then one day it just hit me that I needed to make my own-and so I did.  It turns out that making salsa is ridiculously easy.

Here’s what you need:

Cilantro, large can of tomatoes, one lime, cayenne seasoning(optional), white onion, 1-2 heads of garlic, and salt to taste.

Step One: Add all ingredients to blender or food processor.  The amount you use of each ingredient really just depends on your taste preferences.  Start with this:

1 Jar of tomatoes(juice included)

One onion peeled and chopped

1-2 heads of garlic (I use my garlic press.)

Juice from 1/2 a lime

A small bunch of cilantro

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp salt

(My food processor is small, so I do half a batch at a time.)086

Step Two:  Taste! (This is where you decide if you need to add more of anything.)

During our first tasting we discovered that I may like lime and cilantro more than the other members of my family. 🙂  My husband prefers a very hot salsa.  After a few batches I have concluded that Derek and I just need to have separate salsas;).

Step Three:  Store.  I happened to have some canning jars sitting around.  Another option for storing the salsa is to save your spaghetti jars.090

I like my recipes super quick, easy and tasty.  This salsa met all my requirements!  Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for sharing your recipe, Gretchen! I will definitely try. Curious- do you have to use ‘whole’ tomatoes or do ‘diced’ work just as well? I can’t imagine there would be a difference, but maybe you know something I don’t. 😉 If no difference, I will be making this today as I have all ingredients on hand. 🙂
